The Wharton Difference
Scale :: Innovation :: Engagement
Wharton Computing provides the technology resources and networked environment to sustain Wharton's unparalleled scale, innovation, and collaborative approach to business research and education.
Unparalleled Scale
The largest international business school in the world, Wharton offers the broadest range of programs, supports the research initiatives of the most widely cited faculty, serves the greatest number of full-time students, and provides the richest technology environment of any major business school.
Wharton Computing's extensive systems, infrastructure, services, and applications are designed to meet the needs of Wharton's broad and dynamic community – faculty, students, alumni, and external constituents – while providing the reliability and security required for an academic institution of Wharton's scope and global stature. Classes held on campuses in Philadelphia and at Wharton West in San Francisco are connected through state-of-the-art technology. Wharton Executive Education's Learning Continuum and the Wharton's Alumni Network services use technology to provide an ongoing connection with the School.
Commitment to Innovation
Wharton has been at the forefront of innovation in business education and research since the School's establishment in 1881 as the world's first collegiate business school. This commitment to innovation is reflected in Wharton's approach to technology.
We design and equip our classrooms with state-of-the-art features (both high tech and low tech) to engage students in a stimulating and interactive learning environment, and then extend that interaction through customized online resources such as webCafé. A continuous stream of development takes place in Wharton's Learning Lab. Every year, new features are added to award-winning products and applications such as the student intranet SPIKE, Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS), the bi-weekly e-zine Knowledge@Wharton, and others.
Collaboration and Engagement
Central to technology innovation at Wharton is collaboration with Wharton faculty, students, and staff, as well as with the institutions that use our products and the technology innovators who help us create them. From delivering timely business insights to sophisticated data research services, Wharton technology plays an integral role in the School's ongoing engagement with businesses and business leaders around the world.
What does "collaboration" mean for technology at Wharton? Wharton Computing's "distributed rep" model aligns technology staff directly with faculty and academic teams, working together on a daily basis. Wharton simulations and learning tools are initiated by faculty and developed with their consultation. Student input – through advisory groups, pilot initiatives, and ongoing informal feedback – helps define and refine features of applications and services recognized as models of innovation by leaders in technology and education.
Together, we create the research, learning, and technology environment that distinguishes the Wharton School:
DISCOVERY. COLLABORATION. INNOVATION. IMPACT.
